To be continued...
Hello again friends. Today I wanted to talk about social media.
I am someone who grew up using facebook and all sorts of social media and internet stuff. And lets be real I love them all. But I was never that obsessed with any kind of it. I was always that kid who wanted to play outside all the time. But I see so many people, let's say in coffee house or at lunch together, on their phones not talking to each other. I see 8 year old kid just sitting on computer all day talking to friends online instead of playing with them outside. I see so many people at school not talking to anyone just siting on their phones all day. And that made me think, do social media make us more or less social?
I can't solve this with myself because I think about it and I see so many bad things it is causing in the society like narcissism and obsession, fake relationships with people and isolation from people who surround us. Nobody wants to come and say hi to someone new in real life but they are so brave and confident on social media they have 1000 of friends. They act like someone else, they fake laugh and crythey know no boundaries... And I think in my brain this is not right, social media should be limited some way it is causing just bad things. And then I jump on my twitter to say this, scroll to my instagram feed or stalk my friends on facebook for a second (do you see what I mean). I can't be such a hypocrite. I can't talk just bad about social media when it gave me one of my best friends and it made so easy to me to talk with my family out of country and stuff like that.
So I decided to search of another opinion and I asked 10 female and 10 male friends my age do they think that social media made us more or less social and I was expecting all the answers to be THEY MADE US MORE SOCIAL. But I was wrong 2 out of 10 males said that it made us more social and 1 of 10 females. This was very shocking to me because I know they all have and use social media daily. Then I asked why and they all said things that I said before. They said that people don't feel the need to hang out they just want to text and that they don't think that you can make real relationship with someone through social media and texting, that girls use photoshop to look better, guys go from girl to girl to girl texting same stuff and sending inappropriate photos etc.
I was just more confused with this. Why do we use social media that much if we all know that is bad for us? I think that I asked wrong people because all my friends like me have all social media but are not possessed and they want to go outside and do stuff rather than sitting at home texting. So I decided that I want to do a research. I will ask 10 females and males age 15-18, 18-25 and 25-35 same question "Do you think that social media made us more or less social and why?".
I will do it and then I'll share the results and my final opinion here. Okay let's have some fun and learn about things together. Online friendship yeeee (I know what you thinking).
Thanks for reading friend.

I'm answering as a female from 60 - 80. Being online has made me more social because I hardly have anyone to play with outside the home. So many older people are isolated. Their families have moved away and they have few friends or social events to go to.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for answering. :) Yes, for certain group of people social media and online world is a great thing but for young people it can be dangerous if it's used too much. That's why I want to do a research on different groups of people different age.
ReplyDeleteRightly said, youth should limit use of social media. As in few cases they may even develop narcissistic personality disorder.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes I think that too.
ReplyDeleteI´ll try to explain my point of view in a nutshell. I am in my thirties so I grew up without all these technology. I own my first phone at the age of 20 and apart from this blog I do not really use social media much. I guess social media is ok if your life do not revolve around it. We are more and more dependent on technology and of course to some extent it affects our social skills. People get directions on the phone instead of asking in the street and we can do most things online without interact with another human being. Let along video games. Reality cannot compete with the virtual world. Narcissism, bullying and all the things that you mentioned have always exist. People always have liked to be admired and the center of attention. But I guess now with media it is easier and more obvious. And my answer to your question is NO, social media does not make us more social. I liked your thoughts :)
ReplyDeleteThank you very much. I had internet and social media from very young age but I'm not obsessed with it, I use it once ore twice a day and thats okay but I see more and more people on their phones all the time and that is not good at all. I agree with you 100%.
